VOA documentaries on Buddhist Themes

Adam Phillips’ Audio Archives

In his capacity as a journalist and documentarian for the Voice of America, Adam Phillips has interviewed leading practitioners, including the Dalai Lama, Tara Brach, Gary Snyder, Sogyal Rinpoche and Helen Tworkov. He has generously made some of his interviews and documentaries available to New York Insight.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama on Conflict and the Mind

In 1995, it was my good fortune to be flown down to Atlanta to interview the Dalai Lama. It was in the middle of a very ambitious and (to me) fascinating multi-million dollar project I was producing at the time on conflict resolution, and the psychology of war, violence, reconciliation and peace.  This long form doc uses some clips from His Holiness, and is leavened with dramatized excerpts from his speeches on these subjects, voiced by my colleagues at the VOA’s Tibetan Service. May these words benefit all sentient beings! (First broadcast on VOA).

Includes comments by Allan Ginsberg, Helen Tworkov, Gary Snyder, Rick Fields, Joseph Goldstein and others. (Narrated by Jessica Berman and first broadcast on VOA)

Sharon Salzberg: Part 2

Sharon Salzberg

In this first portion of the interview, Sharon goodnaturedly sloughs off the notion that she has a “title,” and talks with Adam about the similarities and differences between kindness and compassion. She also responds to his suggestion that the concept of “brokenness” is a universal in the spiritual life.

Sharon Salzberg: Part 3

Sharon Salzberg

Here Sharon talks with Adam about the challenges and strategies regarding practical compassion in everyday life, specifcally with panhandlers on the cities, and with aging parents, an increasingly urgent problem for many “boomers.”

Sharon Salzberg: Part 4

Sharon Salzberg

In this portion, Sharon talks about the role of community and sangha in helping caregivers deal with their own emotional pain, and avoiding burnout. This leads to a discussion of the “web” of which we are a part—with our families, our communities, and ultimately, with all living things. This is followed by a discussion of labor, livelihood and work as expressive and supportive of that web in our own personal life situations.
