A Wedding!

This was a first for New York Insight!  Two sangha members got married!  … to each other!!

Emily and Lionel, Congratulations!

What a blessing that our community was a fertile ground for a deeper relationship.
These images tell a story of unification on several levels.

Quan Yin is there to oversee the occasion …

The Buddha raises his right hand, and everybody smiles.

… and the bond is sealed

The Gifts of Mindfulness

On a weekend Retreat on July 17 and 18, 2010, New York Insight was blessed by the offerings of Ajahn Metta and Ajahn Santacitta.

Wisdom and Compassion are the Gift of Mindfulness:
Two Days of Teachings with
Ajahn Metta and Ajahn Santacitta

Four Teachings

Ajahn gave four teachings during a week in May 2010, culminating in the Day Long Retreat,
May 23: The Wings of the Bird–Understanding and Actualizing the Five Spiritual Faculties. A day of exploring all of these Faculties – faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration & wisdom – learning about their nature and ways of developing them to their full potential.

The annual Sitting and Pot Luck
for the POC group.

Board member Tom Carling reports, “Our center was full of an amazing vibrant energy tonight — a real community — and Tian and I were so happy to be a part of it.”

The Jhanas, Step by Step

On Saturday and Sunday, August 2nd and 3rd, Leigh Brasington presented a detailed description of the Jhanas.

Leigh quoted from the Samaññaphala Sutta (complete with similies) the description of each state, and gave us visual and tactile signposts to watch for. With several meditation periods of 45 minutes each, retreatants had ample opportunity to practice the step-by-step instructions Leigh gave us.

The climax of the retreat was Leigh’s retelling of his adaptation of the entire sutta from memory, and in particular his depiction of Ajatasattu.

Two Days of Dharma on the Brain

On Saturday, June 28th, Andrew Olendzki presented a wonderful explication of Paticca Samuppada, or Interdependent Origination.

On Sunday, June 29th, Rick Hanson and Rick Mendius explored just what is going on at the neural level in the brain at the moment of Dependent Co-Arising, and how meditation can train new rivulets in our neural firings.

Than Geoff at NYIMC

Thanissaro Bhikkhu covered 16 pages of quotations from the Pali canon regarding Dependent Co-arising in two days in April at New York Insight.
