People of Color

NYI offers a sitting group for People of Color on the second Monday of every month. No previous meditation experience is required. This sitting group provides instruction in insight meditation and fosters mutual support and understanding among the growing community of people of color who find nourishment and inspiration in the practice.

Sittings are led by Gina Sharpe.

Gina Sharpe is a co-founder, member of the Teachers Council, and Board of Directors of NYI. She discovered the dharma over thrity years ago and has studied and practiced in Asia and the United States. Having retired from the practice of law several years ago, she trained at the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and is a graduate of the first Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program. She has taught at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Insight Meditation Society, Vallecitos Mountain Refuge, Mid America Dharma, Garrison Institute, Asia Society, Tibet House, the New York Open Center, the Katonah Yoga Center, a maximum security prison for women, and at other venues around the United States.
