Introduction to Pali: The Language of the Buddha
with Stephen Sas, a long-time student of Bhikkhu Bodhi
Mondays, September 24th – December 10th, 2018 | 6:30-8:30pm
Ready to engage with the teachings on a deeper level? Take advantage of the rare opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basic Pali, the language in which the texts of early Buddhism are recorded.
By learning the basics of Pali grammar and vocabulary, students can begin to engage directly with the Buddha’s teachings, leading them to understand the world in which the Buddha lived with a richness that cannot be captured in translation.
No prior knowledge of Pali is required. The course will start with the basics, showing students how the alphabet is organized and how to find words in a dictionary. Basic grammar will be covered in depth. Students will begin to read passages of the Pali canon themselves with deeper understanding and insight.
The course textbooks will be Lily de Silva’s Pali Primer and Gair & Karunatillake’s A New Course In Reading Pali. Pali Primer is available both as a printed book and a free download.
For quality of instruction and individual support this course limited to 15 students.
This course is not available for drop-in attendance.
Teacher support is included in the registration fee.
