Online: Meditating With Space

Usually our meditation practice happens “in here” — within the covering of skin that separates “us” from what is “not us.” But certain less well-known meditations in the Buddhist tradition involve an awareness of the space element, and space knows no boundaries.

When we practice being mindful of space, several things happen. First, the mind itself reveals itself to be spacious; rather than our awareness being a small container, it turns out that it’s vast and open. Second, within this open space, our thoughts slow down, and any thinking that remains becomes less compelling, so that thoughts arise and pass away without disturbing our mindfulness. Third, as we maintain an awareness of space, the sense of there being a boundary between “in here” and “out there” can cease to have any meaning, and our sense of self can radically change; the mind is calm and receptive, and the heart open, at ease, and boundless.

This may sound advanced, but over the course of this two-morning workshop, Bodhipaksa will guide us step-by-step through a series of simple meditations that fundamentally change our sense of who (and where) we are.
